Incretins are hormones released in the intestine in response to a meal. The incretins stimulate insulin secretion, inhibits glucagon, and slow emptying of the stomach. The result of these effects is to lower levels of blood sugar in the morning and after a meal. Incretins appear to promote growth and survival of beta cells (cells that release insulin).
